DAN BURLEY WAS MORE THAN JUST A WRITER HE WAS MAGIC

Who was Dan Burley, is was a man who received the keys to almost every major city because of his work as a reporter, journalist in both black and white publications during a time when race defined where you were to be in this society. Dan Burley was the “Hub” of the then called Negro Press, linking into white publications , he was into sports, world news, took the very first Black USO Troop overseas to Burma during WWII, under Bob Hope, and with the help of Martha Raye , the goal was to give the men and women who were black a glimpse how things were progressing in the US as it related to the division, and also offering up the top Black Entertainers of the time, Lena Horn, Eartha Kitt, Lionel Hampton, and others all came all performed and made the men and women within the Armed Services to realize that they were loved and that they had something to return too after the war in the 1940’s. Dan was a musician who created his own style of Jazz/Blues and he performed with everyone.

He coined to wrote BEEBOP and was the real for running for the Hip-hop movement, with his friends Langston Hughes, and Cab Calloway who then was a musician with the Duke Ellington Band. Dan used his Harlem Handbook of Jive a dictionary of HIP phases to move people of all races to understand the Black Culture and society. His friends were vase, from the King of Ethiopia, to three Presidents including Roosevelt and John Kennedy.


Dan knew them all and reported on live as it was within the US as it was seem through the eyes of a Black man.

He was a multi-talented man, and our Foundation is about giving this knowledge to others on how you can make it, no matter what race, creed , religion you are, this Foundation is a movement developed for success and to help those in need to see a passage to freedom and creativity.



IT’S OUR MISSION The Dan Burley Foundation’s mission is the teach, give back to the community with assistance to those who seek to change there live.

Our original goal was to help those within the arts, media, and music community. But because of the issues that impacted on our society both before and after Sept 11th 2001 we saw that there was a tremendous need to help those who are involved in the patriot community, the whistle blowers, formed and create a panel of experts in the area of laws and justice whereby the constitution is kept in tack.

Other issues are within the horrific nightmare of war, and to report and provide solutions to the possible economic collapse of this nation, and create solutions to the issue of the Military men and women who are currently serving in the Middle East, and then those who had served as far back as WWII who maybe still alive in prison camps all over the war.

We are concerned and therefore we within the Dan Burley Foundation are involved in developed of solutions, dealing with the legal system whereby we can provide legal advocacy programs, help with the homeless, development of careers not only jobs but a way that those seeking it can always have a way to make a living.

We are for taking the word “Homeless” out and making people feel viable again without labels. To assist Women and children who are unwed mom’s with families a way to make a living and to feel whole and to teach the same women to respect themselves and look within to find love so that they can make it. Langston Hughes who was a very close friend of my father and my family. Here is a letter langston wrote about my father, please note I had maintained many of Langston unpublished work along with letters and other material that many may have no knowledge of, within the area of my fathers friendship with Langston. My father and Mr. Hughes started the Harlem Jive Movement which was the ZOOT SUIT era, the words and lyrics in many of Cab Calloways songs were that of my father Dan Burley and Langston Huges was involved in this from the beginning. Mr. Calloway in the beginning worked with Duke Ellington and the Band, then moved within this theme of the excitment of the Zoot Suit Slang and hype and yes my father was the father of Beepop and the historical music of that time.

Do you mean to tell me that you do not know where ''Frank's'' is! Or do I read your card wrong? Frank's is the large restaurant on the north side of West 125th Street, exactly 315 West 125th Street. It is just about the oldest restaurant in Harlem and was, I understand, a solid and well known steak and fish place long before Harlem became colored. Many of the old waiters are still there, and some of the old patrons still come from other sections of the city to dine there occasionally.

''Skifferening'' I am not sure about, but I rather imagine it derives from Dan Burley's Blues-Boogie-Woogie style of piano playing (Chicago style), which he calls, ''Skiffle.''

As a little girl growing up I remember that Mr. Hughes loved to go hunting and every year we received quail from him and apples. My mother Gladys would always be in the kitchen making a very special diner from this, we lived at that time at 500 East 33rd Street, in Chicago's Lake Meadows, my father did most of his work out of the apartment Apartment 815. We were the very first family to move into the newer Lake Meadows buildings because my fathers mother owned the lake which was on the grounds of the church located on the corner of 31st and King Dr.
This is a picture of Lake Meadows in Chicago Illinois where many famous black sports figure, entertainer later maintained residence, like the famous Jessie Owens, who won the Olympics in Germany during WWII, I went to the Alderman within the area years ago to get the street named after my father but was refused even though Dan Burley was Lake Meadows and helped to launch many African Americans careers from that address some who later became very well known politicians entertainments and sport figures. Lake Meadows, Prairie Shores had always been racially mixed. Please note that the picture on the right was the property line where my grandmother's property began, she had a candy shop in that area. Anna Seymour Burley - "Reese" was known as "Queenie", and was involved in politics in Chicago on the South-side, she was the first black woman to teach within Armour Tech which is now Illinois Institute of Technology under WEB DUBOIS.

My father was on the board with those seeking to build Lake Meadows and fought against the newly conceived idea of the housing projects. He for saw it as being a structural collapse of Blacks due to controlled environment they offered and at the time it was felt that Blacks coming in from the South needed to be within their own communities. This was never a very openly area of discussion within the white and black population then.


From the concept my father wrote the publication Mohammad Speaks for the Black Nation of Islam. The stories being shared are not correct because I have the original copies of much of the old material. The fact was that S.B. Fuller who was a close friend of my father co-owned the New York Age with Dan, then because of his wife decided to purchase the Pittsburgh Courier because that was her birth place. While the owner of the publication the Nation needed a home and a printing press. They first contacted my father's dear family Mr. Langley Waller in New York City, who was the printer for the Amsterdam News (NYC) to see if they could obtain one of his press, he had a 4 color press at the time, and then they decided to decline the purchase later going to Chicago and contacting the owner of Lerner Press, which was Jewish owned. Before this the column which appeared within the Pittsburgh Courier was written and edited by my father Dan Burley. Because when the nation came to Mr. Fuller he would not allow then to write within his publication unless my father Dan Burley maintained editorial content, then later my dad created another small size publication just like JET Magazine which he had created in New York City prior to coming to Chicago Illinois in 1951 just before I was born. This publication was called Mohammad Speaks which is shown below:

In fact Malcolm X in the late 60's wrote under a different name in a Chicago based publication as did my father who have many many names in publications which he had wrote for so that he would not be danger within exposing the truth!




In 1962 just one day before his birthday my father was invited to cover the Final Solution that was being offered by the Nation of Islam which was to be held at Chicago's McCormick Place. This event was on October 28th 1962, on the day before my father was shaken, sad and I never saw him like this before, it was like he knew something bad was happening. Within that week, President John Kennedy was involved in obtaining information on a crisis that involved Cuba but the fact was it involved more that was never spoken of in the press then and or there after. My father being a reporter knew something, and on the day that the Black Nation of Islam was at McCormick Place President john Kennedy was stopping the Missile Crisis. On October 29th 1962 my father was dead. I always felt he was poisoned murdered that is why? I was told by someone within a government agency that in those days they would take people out with prescribed drugs and or injections. The fact was that my father was on the two drugs at the time of his death! Then there was the issue of his actions the day before, and you can find his name within the Warren Commission Report he knew both Kennedy and Jack Ruby and Dorothy Kilgallen. All now dead and the fact that on that date there were things also happening in the war in "NAM" and the Black Military men, I always looked to locate the truth. They all died via pills just think about it? Or did they know too much!





Because of this issue we need real people in the media getting to the facts, the truth serves the people and protects those involved, because the truth if hidden can lead to your end.
